For those of you who have pets during this time of social distancing, you are lucky to have their companionship during this stressful time. For those who wish they had a pet during all of this, consider fostering if you’re able and willing to do so. Luckily for dogs, they may not be able to understand what’s going on, but I’m sure most of them appreciate the extra time they get to spend with their humans. Here are 10 social distancing activities for your dog to save you and them from excess boredom!
1.Teach Some New Tricks
Has your pet mastered the basics of sit, stay, down, and shake? If not, start there. If they’ve got those down, consider teaching them speak, roll over, and spin. It’s easiest to train your dog when they’re food motivated and then graduate on to clicker training. For some inspiration, check out some Youtube videos on how to start clicker training.
2. Build an Obstacle Course
Not only are obstacle courses fun to make and do, they can also be beneficial in challenging their proprioceptive skills!
3. Bake for your Dog
Tired of eating all your baked goods? There are plenty of dog friendly recipes. Keep in mind any allergies your dog may have, and avoid these ingredients that are toxic to dogs.
4. Online Obedience Course
In normal times, one would take their dog to an obedience class in person. Now, we can thank technology for helping us add a bit of normalcy back into our lives, which brings us to online obedience classes. They include great social distancing activities. It’s also not a bad way for your dog to be engaged while you get to meet new people all from the comfort of your own home.
5. Find Out Your Dog’s IQ
Intelligence doesn’t matter too much for the average doggo, but nevertheless, it’s fun to determine where they’re at in the smarts department. Find out for yourself doing an a DIY home test!
6. Give Your Dog a Pamper Session
Bath, nail trim, ear cleaning, oh my! Not all dogs enjoy this, but cleanliness is important for dogs! Before pampering your pet, make sure you have the appropriate items and techniques.
7. Give a Doggy Massage
Follow a nice (or stressful) grooming session with a doggy massage! Not only is this relaxing for both your pooch and you, it also helps soothe their muscles just like in us.
8. Play Hide and Seek
This is reminiscence of childhood memories, but quarantine is the perfect time to dust some of those off! Distract your dog with a treat and then quietly make a break for it and hide. Then, call out your dog’s name and hope they come to try and find you. Reward them with attention when they do! This is a perfect social distancing activity for kids too!
9. Make a Dog Friendly Toy
There never was a better time to try DIY crafts. Rather than make another scarf you’ll never wear, try making something for your furry best friend. There are tons of toys you can make at home. Just be sure to avoid anything that can be torn up or eaten easily, and be sure to supervise your dog with the toy and inspect for damage.
10. Go on a Walk/Hike
Unfortunately, the days of going up to stranger’s dogs and asking to pet them will have to wait until social distancing activities are a thing of the past. For now, go on a walk if you can, and remember that no matter what we’re going through right now, your best friend is there for the love and support you need.
